I’ve been wearing the Teva Mush Frio Lace Canvas shoes for the last few weeks and they are my new go to for casual footwear. They are a super-comfortable entry into the new breed of ‘sandals with shoe uppers. The ‘Mush’ is Teva’s signature soft, foot-contouring sole. They have the comfort of Sanuk’s with a much more attractive style and better build quality. As someone who is a strong proponent of the minimalist footwear movement, I was excited to review these new Tevas.
The Mush Frio Lace Canvas is basically a Teva Mush flip-flop sole combined with a casual sneaker upper. This upper has an antimicrobial mesh lining to keep it fresh. There is very little support to speak of and I am quite ok with that, as I believe our feet our able to support themselves when given the chance. The insole has a somewhat squishy feel as you would expect from Teva Mush, and I’ve found that it has begun to mold to my foot nicely. The first thing you notice about the Mush Frio Canvas when you pick them up is how incredibly lightweight they are – a mere 5.4 oz. basically don’t notice them when they are on, which feels great. The Mush Frio Canvas is part of Teva’s new Mush Flyweight Collection, and I can fully understand why it belongs there.
The fit was a little off for me at first, and I had to go up from my usual size 12 to a 13 because I felt like I was falling off the back of the shoe in the size 12s. A key fitting point for me on any shoe is a wide toe box because your toes need room to spread naturally. The Mush Frios didn’t disappoint here. I recommend sizing up a half to whole size in the Mush Frios, but otherwise I thought the overall fit was perfect for a casual shoe. Note that I found the laces to be primarily an aesthetic touch. I have actually been slipping into and out the shoes without unlacing because the shoe is ‘closed’ already without them, and the laces don’t lend much in the way of fit adjustment. From a style standpoint, I have received a lot of compliments on the look of the Teva Mush Frio Lace Canvas in the Dune color I tested, and I think it is my favorite of the color options available. They look great with jeans and pair well with khakis in a laid-back environment. I’ve been using them as my to-and-from the ski mountain shoes because of the easy on and off and comfort. The shoe is also totally collapsible and can be readily stashed in a bag for transport or travel.
Overall, the Teva Mush Frio Lace Canvas is a real winner in the casual shoe category. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who dreads the time of year where they can’t wear flip flops anymore.
