I was beginning to think that summer was never going to end. As I start this review, it’s November 1st. Many days have basically been 80 and sunny here in Denver, Colorado. Technically, we are considered to be “high dessert”. At this point, we do get our fair share of weather one hour West into the mountains.
Finally, the time comes with a trip to the Canadian Rockies; Banff to be exact. A perfect time to bundle up, and utilize the Mammut Rime Light IN Flex Hooded Jacket to the fullest extent. I’m aware that there are a lot of nice features to this jacket which I will dive into below. For now, I love how soft it feels as well as the clean Swiss look of the Mammut Rime.

Mammut claims that the Rime is the perfect all-rounder. I tend to agree as I’ve used it for many activities, and have plenty more in mind. This jacket combines superior warmth while being extremely lightweight to wear and pack/stow on mountain adventures. I have a perfect and fun mountain playground practically in my backyard to take it for a spin.
DWR water repellant coating is a common thing these days. Thus far it has done its job by protecting me from the wind. The stitching has been designed to create zoned insulation for optimal heat thermal protection. All the while, allowing for freedom of movement.

I was going to say, read the tag, and follow the directions. Turns out, there are none, so here’s the details.

- Do not iron or treat with steam
- Tumble dry gentle

I used the Rime a few times as a mid-layer when skiing. There were days, it wasn’t super cold, but at times as the sun came out, I was quite hot which in part is due to the jacket.
Using The Mammut Rime Light IN Flex Hooded Jacket
Mammut is labeling this piece of apparel as an all mountain jacket. And yes, I have come to experience this insulated coat as an all around everyday life jacket. Hands down it’s warm, cozy, and comfortable while at the same time, form fitting, water repellant, and looks great.
The really unique element to point out is the insulation that they use. Mammut’s Loopinsulation is recycled rope scraps from the factory. An admirable way to create something so toasty warm. It’s been my mid layer underneath my ski shell. On those blustery days it’s been a life saver.

The pockets are slightly higher up than what you might be used to. Reason being is that it allows for waist straps and harnesses to encompass the body while still having pocket access. If you are not a climber, it may seem that they are a bit high for comfortably stuffing one’s hands in. That said, it by no means eliminates it from consideration for my many active uses. I am not necessarily a climber, but I can see this is a good option for a hiking backpack or a bike commuter pack.

The Rime features an adjustable hood as well as three zippered pockets. The hood fits snug but not tight. I’m a stickler for hoods that don’t fit. Now, I’m normally not the “hoodie” wearing type, but on the rare occasion that the weather does its thing, I want it to fit properly. The chest pocket is good for safely slipping your phone in.
- The hood has slight brim, but fits really well.
- The easily accessible pull tie on the back of the head, can tighten the hood.
I am basically considering this my insulated all mountain jacket. It has worked well in the hiking department. I’m not a climber in the purest sense, but depending on the conditions, this jacket can surely be a handy partner. It’s certainly not a cycling jacket, yet I have worn the Rime on my 12 mile roundtrip work commutes. A brisk journey has been turned into a pleasant and reinvigorating experience as I have stayed nice and warm. The wind resistance proved to be the best part for this activity. Additionally, the visibility aspect proved very effective. Bright red and hopefully a life saver. The Mammut Rime has been a very valuable addition to my skiing apparel as mentioned. And I find myself grabbing it on a daily basis to run around town, etc.
Final Thoughts On The Mammut
Mammut is a Swiss staple since 1862. That’s a long time to design and refine a coat like the Rime. Swiss precision is at play to present a clean and technically sound design while really creating a warm coat. The Mammut Rime is a lightweight, stylish, and quite advanced jacket to meet the demands of winter. I like that it looks good which makes me feel good. It’s definitely a worthy addition to my gear closet. For more information or to check one out for yourself visit mammut.com, rei.com, backcountry.com or amazon.com.

The continental divide above Loveland Ski Resort sits 9′ shy of 12,000 of elevation. Windy and blustery pretty much sums it up despite the sunny blue bird sky.
