Salomon Ghost Custom Air Helmet Review

As it is becoming well known that ski and snowboard helmets help protect you from critical injuries, helmet makers such as Salomon are starting to push the boundaries with function and fashion. I’ve been testing out the Salomon Ghost Custom Air helmet for the past month or so at Vail, Breckenridge, and Keystone in lovely Colorado. So far the snow has been amazing for early season, lots of powder stashes to exploit. With great snow, I like to push my limits further than normal; whether it is skiing faster through trees, making sharper turns, making bigger jumps, etc. When I saw that Salomon had a helmet out that reminded me of the old school Reebok Pumps, I knew that I had to try it.
Now the Reebok Pumps were big in the 80’s and everyone wanted a pair because the shoes were pushed far outside the innovative boundaries that most of us have seen. Putting a similar system into a helmet, I was a little skeptical if it would actually work or go flat like the Reebok Pumps. The thing that makes sense on the surface is that helmets are typically made in 4 or so sizes, yet I have to assume that there are more than 4 head sizes out there. That said, being able to pump air into the helmet to get a custom fit on your exact head is nice. I typically wear a size medium and Salomon sent me a large to test. Being able to pump air into the helmet really helped the helmet fit my head in this case. I have to admit though, it wasn’t as comfortable as other helmets on the market. I think part of that may be due to getting the wrong sizes.
Some of the other features worth mentioning include a removable visor and head liner. I personally haven’t found a need to take off the visor, but if that is your thing, have at it. The liner on the other hand is something that is nice to wash from time to time. I personally don’t wash helmet liners a ton, but after a number of big powder days where I am sweating a lot, I like to be able to wash out some of the funk. The helmet has holes for ventilation which seemed to do the trick on most days. The helmet might possibly get hot on warm spring skiing days, but in that case, you can also take off the faux fur ear flaps.
The Salomon Ghost Custom Air Helmet is pretty spendy in our mind for a helmet. If however price is not as much as an object, the Salomon Ghost Custom Air helmet is a solid helmet that looks pretty sweet and has some innovative features.
