The Xtracycle RFA Is Designed For Hauling Stuff

RFA (Ready For Anything) is an awesome title for this sweet kid and cargo hauling machine. Solidly built with all the bells and whistles, the RFA will satisfy so many of my urban trips. More so, I like the fact, that I can leave the car in the garage. This e-bike looks the part, and has the battery capacity to take some longer trips.

Xtracycle knows a thing or two about the long-tail ebike as they’ve been making and perfecting them for years. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that this Cargo E-bike will blow the doors wide open on the versatility factor, all while going faster getting me to my destination quicker.

Out Of The Box And Ready To Go

The xtracycle RFA is pretty much assembled as much as feasibly possible. Shipping constraints have to be taken into consideration on that front. The target consumer (I’m going to guess) doesn’t want to fuss around with putting a bike together. Hence, Xtracycle has made it pretty easy to put the final parts and pieces together with implicit instructions and/or available videos. If this level of assembly still stresses you out, the local bike shop can likely help you.

Top Notch Components

You pay for what you get, and that’s definitely the case with all the components that adorn this e-bike. The moving parts as far as the drive-train goes are mostly Shimano. They are an industry leader in providing components to the highest level of road bikes down to the more basic kid bikes. That said, the e-bike world is also a huge market, and I would like to think I will have a nice long lifespan with these components. Obviously, you do need to take care of them with regular maintenance and cleaning. In addition, the battery and charger are also made by Shimano.

The battery delivers 20% more range than the typical e-bike battery which is grand. Also, this is a mid-drive motor with a torque sensing system which matches your power input gradually. This is a way bigger thing than what I’ve mentioned here, but I’m hoping to experiment with this in the near future, and talk more about that in the full blown review.

FSA (Full Speed Ahead), a mainstay on many of bikes, is also featured with the cranks, chain ring, and headset. To wrap it all up Xtracycle has added their proprietary touch to many of the add-ons like the kickstand, racks, and footrests to name a few.

Sizes And Colors

Well, this is about as simple as it gets. One size fits all, and black and white are your color options! I would like to see a few more colors if that’s possible for Xtracycle to conjure up in future renditions. Not a deal breaker in my book, but I know many people love their colors to reflect their personality. I, for one, would go for a very visible orange, but I do like my clean white mode of transportation.

Pricing And Value

The 20mph version comes in at $4999, and 28mph e-bike is a little more at $5499. Many of the basic accessories are included, and will definitely get you going. There are a few other items you can pick up to accommodate your personal preference and use.

The value of a bike like this is a topic of great discussion. Again, you pay for what you get, and you do get a higher end cargo e-bike in the Xtracycle RFA. I usually break it down into something that many can understand. A car payment of $500 a month has just bought you an average car, and that lease or loan would last a minimum of 3 years. In this case, $500 per month for 1 year gets you this bike to keep to use for years on end. Each year you own and enjoy this bike, brings that monthly down. Let’s say you keep it for 5 years, this bike costs you $100 per month. No gas, no insurance, no pricey maintenance. Plus, you get the joy of riding a bike. It’s a no-brainer in my opinion.

Final Thoughts

I am liking what I’ve had a chance to experience thus far. The Xtracycle looks and feels the part from a quality and performance standpoint. The ride is smooth, and the carrying capabilities are endless. Be it people or cargo, you can’t go wrong to at least give this electric cargo bike a look when entertaining the options out there. Stay tuned for a deeper dive into what the Xtracycle RFA has to offer in our upcoming full review. More info can be found at www.xtracycle.com.
