As an avid trail runner and hiker, I’ve had my share of grueling races and exhilarating ascents. The ups and downs of these adventures, both literal and figurative, have always resonated with me. That’s why the collaboration between Ciele Athletics and Ostrya, encapsulated in their “Pointless Ups and Downs” (PUD) collection, immediately caught my attention. This line, designed for the unpredictable nature of outdoor pursuits, speaks directly to those who understand that the journey’s challenges are often outweighed by the rewards of views that most will not experience. It’s in embracing these challenges that we find true fulfillment.

The PUD collection, featuring the Alpinum fleece, the NTRTShirt, and the TRKCap SC, aims to provide functional and stylish gear for those who thrive on the mountainside. Each piece reflects a commitment to performance, protection, and innovative design, all while embracing the inevitable ups and downs of outdoor adventures.
The NTRTShirt

The NTRTShirt, retailing at $115, is undoubtedly the most expensive tee in my wardrobe. But it’s not just the price that sets it apart. This shirt uses the newly engineered Sorino fabric, which combines naturally hydrophobic wicking hemp fibers with organic cotton. This results in a structured yet soft fabric that performs exceptionally well.

I’ve worn this shirt on trails runs, around town, biking, and hiking, and I appreciate its loose cut and airy feel. The natural wicking properties of hemp manage moisture effectively, while the cotton ensures comfort. However, I learned the hard way that you need to lay it flat to dry, as it wrinkles easily in the dryer. Although I wasn’t surprised that the white shirt stained quickly during my outdoor escapades, I was disappointed because it is expensive.

The TRKCap SC
Priced at $70, the TRKCap SC combines style and functionality. It features a pinched crown, a modern front panel backed by COOLmatic 3D air mesh, and a racer mesh for breathability. The cap fits deep, covering the sides of my head all the way down to my ears.

One unique aspect is its Velcro patch attachment. While the included patch is fine, the ability to customize with other patches is a fun touch. This cap’s high crown style reminds me of the first one I bought in Ouray, Colorado.

The Alpinum Half-Zip Fleece
The Alpinum fleece, at $170, is Ostrya’s “newest and most technical pullover to date”. It’s designed as a lightweight, breathable midlayer for high-intensity activities, doubling as a standalone piece in cooler weather. Features like flatlock seams, raglan sleeves, and an articulated elbow enhance comfort and mobility. The sleeve length is perfect, but unfortunately, the torso length falls short—literally.
Additionally, while the fleece has a spot for a patch, it does not come with one, which was a minor letdown. While the fleece’s fabric feels luxurious, its fit falls short—literally. It’s too short for my torso, making it uncomfortable for extended wear. This was a deal-breaker for me, so I passed it on to my wife, who has a shorter torso. It is a good 1-2 inches shorter compared to the shirt and is also not as wide.

Conclusion
The Ciele Athletics x Ostrya PUD collection offers a mix of innovative design and functionality. If I had to choose, the NTRTShirt stands out as my favorite for its comfort and performance, despite its susceptibility to stains. The TRKCap SC is a close second, with its unique design and customization options. The Alpinum fleece, while high-quality, didn’t fit me well. does the shirt run large? How’s the fit? Does it shrink in the wash?
Thank you, Greg, for your question! I did find the shirt to fit a little looser compared to other shirts in that size, but for me, I would not size down. I think if I were to get a medium, it would be too small or tight. I really like the combination of the material and how free it feels. It did not shrink after washing and drying it. For reference, I am 6’0″ tall and weigh 190 lbs. I usually wear a large, and that is the size I got in this shirt.
Does it shrink though? Or all good? I’m 6 foot 2 230 pounds, so you reckon xl ?
It did not shrink after washing it. I think XL would work well for you.
