Scarpa Gecko Approach Shoe Review

Stylish, cool, and hip is what gave me the inclination to take a closer look at these to test and review. These water-resistant suede leather upper shoes provide a mix of comfort, durability, and abrasion resistance. From the get-go, true to their name, it appears that I can probably use these Scarpa Gecko’s for a variety of activities. Furthermore, they look to be a solid and quality shoe. I’ve got a pair of Scarpa Oxygen GTX shoes that are still going strong. Upon reflection, I didn’t realize that I’ve had them for nearly 10 years now. That’s a good omen as I hope to keep these Gecko’s for the long run as well.

I like this graphic below that breaks down the specifics of how the various soles function and cooperate together.

  1. Midsole: Lower density EVA insert for cushioning
  2. Midsole: Medium density EVA midsole for stability
  3. Outsole: SuperGum technology outsole.
  4. Tread Design

Outsole

PRESA is Scarpa’s R&D department’s approach to designing a proprietary sole, built on exploratory experience, scientific research, and technological innovation. These soles have a certain pliancy that creates a grounded connection with various surfaces. The midsole along with this PRESA outsole work together to provide impact absorption. That explains the softer responsive nature of these shoes. I’m used to a stiffer sole for many of the approach and/or hiking shoes I’ve worn. Not the case with these Scarpa Gecko’s and the PRESA Outsole.

This hybrid construction is board-lasted in the rear for support and torsional control and slip-lasted in the forefoot for flexibility and sensitivity.

Let’s talk about SuperGum! This rubber compound provides extra traction with enhanced grip and durability. Interestingly, it has three times the abrasion resistance of butyl rubber. It has the look of steel-plated strength.

Midsole And Insole

The midsole features medium-density EVA, which balances softness and stability. Depending on your body, preference, or activity, you get to decide which factor matters more. I like my shoes to provide some comfort while also absorbing the impact of the terrain. Fortunately, that’s exactly what the Scarpa Geckos do.

These shoes come with Ortholite comfort foam insoles. Foam typically suggests cushioning, but these actually feature a low-density EVA insole. Surprisingly, they’re still quite comfortable. Climbing shoes are one thing, but approach shoes are another. I’ve owned some that were extremely rigid, and I understand why—they need to handle rocky terrain. However, the Geckos strike a balance between comfort and support.

The insoles provide long-term cushioning while maintaining breathability. I’m impressed with how lightweight and comfortable these shoes are.

Upper

Scarpa’s unique suede and lacing system stand out. Most shoes don’t have laces extending this far down, but this design really resonates with me (and I’m sure with others as well). It’s a signature Scarpa feature that allows for a custom fit across the entire foot. Since everyone’s feet are unique, this adjustability is a major plus.

The suede upper is soft yet durable, and it’s water-resistant. You can’t go swimming in them, but they’ll repel wet or snowy trails for a while.

The overlasted toe rand (or “bumper,” as I call it) is great for protection against jagged rocks and roots, preserving both the upper and midsole for long-term durability. The heel bumper also offers substantial reinforcement.

Day to Day Use Of The Scarpa Gecko

I’m not a hardcore climber, so for me, the approach aspect of these shoes serves a different purpose. I use them for hiking in the woods and mountains. Once the high-altitude snow clears in the summer, I’ll test them on Colorado’s thirteen- and fourteen-thousand-foot peaks.

In the meantime, I’ve used them for daily mountain winter wear. Driving to and from ski resorts has been effortless in these shoes. They’re incredibly comfortable after a long day in rigid ski boots.

Their grip on icy parking lots is impressive. I stay busy at the slopes—unloading skis from the roof rack, helping little ones with their gear—and these shoes have provided reliable traction.

I prefer below-the-ankle hiking shoes over higher-cut boots, as locking my ankles in place just doesn’t feel right for me. The Scarpa Geckos fit that preference perfectly. They offer good cushioning without being bulky.

Final Thoughts On The Scarpa Gecko

The Scarpa Geckos feel like an amphibious assault on the mountains—offering comfort, durability, and impact absorption, all of which contribute to their success. Having worn them as daily mountain commuters and for shorter snow hikes, I’m really impressed with the fit and comfort. The traction is incredible, thanks to the SuperGum compound, which helps keep you upright.

The Gecko is a fantastic multi-functional shoe that excels in style and performance. If you’re looking for a versatile active shoe, these hit the mark. All that said, for more details, information, or purchase, please visit scarpa.com or amazon.com.
