After a weekend outdoors in the Colorado Rockies, it’s common to come home with dried, cracked skin. The dry air and constant wind seem to always leave my skin feeling rough and uncomfortable. Recently, instead of just dealing with the dry itching, we started using Bag Balm and it’s been a game-changer.

Bag Balm, based in Vermont, has been protecting skin for over 125 years. It originally wasn’t intended for human use, it was developed to soothe and treat cracked and irritated cow udders. But people soon discovered that if it could help cows, it could work just as well on human skin. Since then, it’s been used for a variety of purposes, from treating soldiers’ hands to keeping service dogs’ paws in good shape. Today, Bag Balm offers a wider range of products, including soap and lip balms.

Our family spends a lot of time rafting and camping, and while we love these activities, the Colorado environment can be tough on our skin, hands, and lips. This fall, we’ve been using the Bag Balm Dry Skin Bundle to keep our skin comfortable and ready for the next adventure.

About the Bag Balm Dry Skin Bundle and Lip Balm

With so many great products from Bag Balm, it was hard to pick just one! So, we decided to try a variety and see what works best for us. Our bundle included a tube of the Original Bag Balm, moisturizing lip balm, exfoliating soap, and moisturizing lotion with Shea butter. This combination seems perfect for the dry conditions of the West.

The Original Bag Balm is made from Petrolatum, Lanolin, Paraffin, Water, and 8-Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate. This 125-year-old formula is ideal for treating dry skin, split heels, chapped lips, calluses, tattoos, and cuticles. And yes, it’s still great for cow udders, too!

The exfoliating soap is designed to clean and moisturize at the same time. Enriched with lanolin, it soothes damaged and cracked skin. Made from ingredients like Sodium Palmate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Glycerin, Lanolin, and Peppermint Leaf, it’s great for scrubbing away tough dirt, dry, flaky skin, and is suitable for general body washing.

The moisturizing lotion is a fast-absorbing, fragrance-free solution for dry skin. Infused with Shea butter, cocoa seed butter, and other natural ingredients, it keeps skin hydrated without feeling greasy. It’s made from a blend of Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Shea Butter, Cocoa Seed Butter, and more.

The moisturizing lip balm combines lanolin and vitamin E to provide long-lasting relief for dry, chapped lips. The non-greasy formula includes Petrolatum, Squalane, Lanolin Wax, and Vitamin E, offering deep hydration in any weather.

Finally, the Balm Stick with Vitamin E is perfect for on-the-go moisturizing. It comes in a twist-up container for easy use and is formulated with Petrolatum, Lanolin, Vitamin E, Coconut Oil, and Aloe for quick, convenient skin hydration whenever you need it.

Thoughts on the Bag Balm Dry Skin Bundle and Lip Balm

It’s been an unseasonably hot and dry late summer and early fall here in the mountains of Colorado. Between rafting trips, hunting outings, backpacking, and hiking, the Bag Balm collection has accompanied me on all my outdoor adventures. Historically, I haven’t always taken the best care of my skin. I’m pretty good about applying sunscreen, but I’ve neglected keeping my skin moisturized. My skin tends to get dry and itchy, and I’ve usually just dealt with it. However, after experiencing the comfort of properly hydrated skin, it’s hard to imagine going back to the days of letting it dry out.

The Products Work Well In Combination

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with all the products in the Bag Balm collection. The Balm Stick, Moisturizing Lip Balm, Moisturizing Lotion, Exfoliating Soap, and the Original Bag Balm each have a place in my outdoor pack. I’ve found myself using the Bag Balm products in combination, and they work really well together.

My skin care routine now starts in the shower with the Bag Balm Exfoliating Soap. I have sensitive skin that tends to dry out easily with most soaps, but the Exfoliating Soap has been gentle and effective. I especially like using it after working on my car. It cleans off the grease without leaving my skin feeling stripped and dry, which is something I’ve struggled with using other soaps.

After a shower or anytime I wash my hands, I apply the Moisturizing Lotion. This low-fragrance lotion is fantastic. It hydrates without leaving a greasy residue. It’s on par with some of my favorite lotions, and it’s become a daily staple.

Moisturizing Lotion

When I’m out in the field, the Original Bag Balm and the Moisturizing Stick really shine. The Original Bag Balm is an outstanding product, and just a small amount goes a long way. It’s been a lifesaver during dry, windy days in the field. Where it really excels is when I’m on the oars of a raft. Between sun exposure and constant water contact, my hands usually end up dry, cracked, and uncomfortable after a long day on the river. The lanolin-based formula of Bag Balm works wonders in these harsh conditions, keeping my hands protected and hydrated.

The Balm Stick is perfect for quick, on-the-go application. I love how easy it is to use, especially with my kids. A few quick swipes on their hands and cheeks, and we’re good to go. The stick is compact, making it easy to tuck into a pocket or backpack for convenient access.

Don’t Forget the Lip Balm

Hiking and hunting at 12,000 feet can be brutal on lips. Between the wind, sun, and dry air, my lips usually end up chapped and cracked. During a recent deer hunt, I almost forgot to use the Moisturizing Lip Balm, and after a day of suffering, I finally remembered I had it. It was a game-changer for the rest of the trip. By the time my next elk hunt came around, I made sure to use it from the start, and it was nice to come home without windburned lips.

Loving the Lip Balm

No Chapped Lips!

Moisturizing Lip Balm

For me, the combination of these products is ideal. Each one has its own specific use in the outdoors, and together they cover all the bases. One feature I really appreciate is the lack of fragrance. When hunting and fishing, I prefer fragrance-free products to avoid any scents that might deter animals or fish. Plus, I’m not a fan of synthetic smells or flavors, so Bag Balm’s approach is right up my alley.

Although the products I tested are part of the Bag Balm Dry Skin Bundle, I also included the Moisturizing Lip Balm in this review. This addition allowed me to evaluate its effectiveness alongside the other products, providing a more comprehensive assessment of how the entire collection works to hydrate and protect the skin in outdoor conditions.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Bag Balm collection has exceeded my expectations. Each product serves a specific purpose, but together, they form a complete skin care routine that’s perfect for an active, outdoor lifestyle. From the exfoliating soap in the shower to the Original Bag Balm in the field, I’ve found the entire lineup to be versatile and effective. The products have become essential for protecting my skin, whether I’m rafting, hunting, or hiking. I especially appreciate the thoughtful formulation with no overpowering fragrances, just solid, reliable protection that works in the harsh Colorado climate. Bag Balm has earned a permanent spot in my gear bag, and I’ll be relying on it for many more outdoor adventures to come. For more info or to pick some up for yourself visit amazon.com/bagbalm.
