Gnara Go There Pants Review

As an avid outdoor adventurer, I spend a lot of days and overnights in the backcountry hiking, backpacking, rafting, and camping. In all of this time outdoors away from the hustle and bustle of civilization yet also the convenience of readily available restrooms, I’ve had to embrace “going” in the outdoors. As a female, this can be quite a challenge. One that usually leaves my backside bare and exposed to the elements, hungry mosquitos, or other people on the trail. That’s where the innovation of the GoFly in Gnara’s Go There Pants comes into play.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and that is true for the founders of Gnara (formerly SheFly). As a female guide in Alaska, Georgia Grace Edwards felt torn between cutting her water consumption and taking the risk to hike across the glacier she was guiding on whenever nature called. Her male colleagues could easily unzip their flies to pee discreetly. Back in her dorm room in Vermont, Georgia Grace and two of her classmates Bianca Gonzales and Charlotte Massey created a zipper system that would allow women to pee in the outdoors without stripping off their pants. The birth of the GoFly zipper was the answer to this problem and eventually helped launch a series of products by Gnara including the Go There Pants to make answering nature’s call safer, convenient, and more inclusive.

Go There Pants Features

The Go There Pants are made from a 93% nylon 7% spandex with a durable water repellent finish. There are two front pockets, a zippered thigh pocket on the right side, and two back packets with sewed flaps to prevent losing items. There is a typical zippered fly and button closure at the waist in addition to the GoFly zipper. For a more customized fit, there is an inner waist tie as well as outer belt loops if you choose to wear a belt. At each ankle there is an elastic pull that you can cinch tight to keep out ticks or change the style of the pants into joggers. In addition there are snap loops to keep rolled up pants secure as capri length.

GoFly Zipper

The design of the GoFly zipper is basically a secondary zipper in the crotch that starts just below the typical zip-fly but extends backwards all the way up to the rear waist. This creates a fairly large opening in the pants when unzipped in order to create access for answering nature’s call.

First Impressions and Fit of Gnara Go There Pants

Out of the box I was impressed by the weight of the Go There Pants. The fabric seemed more thick and durable than other hiking pants I have used in the past. I really like the color I chose, Pine, which was a nice dark green. While I think I would easily blend in with US Forest Service employees, I have found the green color goes well with a variety of other colors. There are 8 other colors to choose from if green isn’t your color.

I am typically a size 0 in pants, which is what I ordered. They fit perfectly. The waist is high but the stretch in the material is forgiving and allows for movement. I didn’t need to use the waist ties, but I like that they are there if I need to cinch the waist up in the future.

Out on the Trail with the Gnara Go There Pants

The Go There Pants are definitely at home on the trail. These have been my go-to pants for all hikes this fall. The thick, durable fabric holds up well and protects my legs from rocky rough terrain and bushwhacking through sage brush and willows. I was worried that the thicker fabric would be too hot, but found the pants maintained breathability even hiking on a warmer afternoon. I appreciated the durable water repellent finish on the fabric as well. Water beaded up on the fabric when I was splashed by my dog while hiking along a creek.

I loved the side pocket as it allowed me to stow my phone for easy access for taking photos. My iPhone 16 fits perfectly in this pocket. I also appreciated the sewed on flaps on the back pockets to keep small items in place.

The elastic cinches at the ankles are a nice feature to keep out bugs and keep the pant cuffs in place on my hiking boots. I also like the option of making these pants transform into capris for warmers days.

Testing the Gnara Go There Pants GoFly zipper

I have to say, peeing while wearing pants does feel a little strange at first. But it does work. No pee on the pants and no pee on my feet! There is nothing truly discreet about squatting to pee in the woods though. When the GoFly zipper is fully unzipped I did still feel exposed and felt the need to hide behind some bushes. I do like that I didn’t have to drop my pants and fully expose my backside. This will be especially useful on cold days or if I’m in an area with a lot of biting flies or mosquitos!

One thing to note is that due to the GoFly zipper, there is extra fabric in the crotch area of the pants. The first time I wore these pants it bunched up little bit when I hiked, but I found that having the pants pulled up all the way helped relieve the bunching. I didn’t notice the extra fabric on subsequent hikes.
