Rumpl was started in 2013 when a couple was stranded in the mountains after their van broke down in sub-zero weather. They bundled up in their sleeping bags, drank some whiskey and waited for help. This is where the Rumpl idea was born. I love this story as I am also currently living in a van (that occasionally breaks down) with my husband and two dogs. We were in search of a blanket that we could use on our bed, drag onto a beach or use to cushion our bums on a rocky bluff. I ordered the two-person Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket. After a month of using it, I can honestly say it is so much more than I expected.

I needed a blanket that didn’t attract dog hair, didn’t get soaked when wet dogs jumped on it, and could stand up to all that my husband and I would put it through. This eliminated anything that was fleece or down. The Rumpl Original Puffy was the only logical choice for my needs.

Made of Recycled Materials

One of the things that first drew my attention to the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket was the fact that is made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. I’m not talking about just the filling. The polyester shell, also. Each of the 2-person blankets utilizes 100 post consumer plastic bottles to create. I thought that was really amazing! I feel like this blanket is really something to be proud. Nice work, Rumpl!

My First Impression of the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket

When my Rumpl blanket first arrived, I couldn’t believe the quality that I felt in my hands. I hadn’t realized all the features included in this amazing purchase. The stuff sack is super lightweight, but rugged. It comes with attachment points on the outside and a small carabiner to attach it to your gear. When I pulled the blanket out of the bag, it puffed up quickly and didn’t feel like it had suffered any from being stuffed in the small stuff sack.

The blanket is super light, weighing in at 3.7 lbs. That’s really light for a warm blanket that measures 80″ x 84″. It is plenty large enough for our double bed with lots of extra on each side. Being that my husband and I both measure up around 6 ft tall, we were super happy with the extra length to cover our feet. After using it for about a week on out bed, I had to “steal” it and take it on a solo adventure myself.

The Finer Details

The Rumpl Original Puffy is a quilted, super warm blanket. While the website indicates that it is a 45 degree blanket, I found that I was plenty warm when I took it on a solo car camping trip into the mountains. This blanket has everything it needs to be an “everything’ blanket. While in the mountains, I used it as my bedding, my warmth during dinner prep and to take in the sunset at the end of a big day.

The blanket has high quality stitching with a corded edge. Each of the corners has a paracord loop so that it can be staked to the ground. While I haven’t yet tried it, the corded corners also allow this blanket to be used as a hammock under-quilt! I’m certain that we are taking this on our next backpacking trip in place of our two sleeping bags that we zip together (not ideal!). The silky softness and the featherweight of this blanket are like nothing I’ve felt in a blanket before. The shell feels like the high end outdoor gear that we all dream about and the warmth is so surprising.

The Durability (and Cleanliness) Test

Living in a van with a husband and two Australian Cattle Dogs means that I am literally sharing everything with my little family. This means that we are usually sleeping with the dogs, eating on our bed or dragging our blanket outside to stay warm. I knew that Rumpl advertises the durability of it’s Original Puffy Blanket but it wasn’t until I used it that I really understood. After about a month of full time use, I can barely see a speck of dirt on this blanket. If you live in a van, you know how valuable that is. No one likes the laundromat. I haven’t had to wash the blanket yet. That’s pretty amazing since our previous bed covering needed to be washed weekly because of the dirty dogs.

The Original Puffy Blanket sheds hair, crumbs, water and even spills if you clean it up right away. It repels the dew from the grass on an early morning coffee outside and just stays clean! I absolutely love this. Prior to writing this review, I looked over the blanket closely to see if I could see any damage from dog claws or rough rocks as we have really used this blanket hard. The blanket looks as new as the day I opened the package. I expect that it will last a long time!

Beautiful Design Options and Color Choices

Aside from being an all around awesome blanket for us living in our van, I love that the blanket had really become the centerpiece of beauty in our modest home. If you are planning to order a 1-person Original Puffy Blanket, you will have 19 different designs to choose from. From artists masterpieces, National Park designs or sunsets, you are sure to find what you need. I was a little disappointed that the 2-person quilt was only offered in 5 of those beautiful designs but I ordered the “Pyro Fade” which really is breathtaking. The Rumpl Insulated Can Blankets

As long as I was ordering from Rumpl, I saw that they had amazing can koozies on their website. I ordered two of the koozies in the color Deepwater. We absolutely love them! They are super packable into an attached pouch and fold down to about 2″ x 2″. I love that they can just slip into a pocket when not being used. Right now, they are perfect for in our van and take up no space. We are heading to a music concert later this summer and I know they will be perfect for keeping our beverages cold while in the sweltering heat. They only cost $5 each.

Rumpl’s Original Puffy Blanket: So Much More Than I Expected

I know that I have already said this earlier in my review but the OPB was so much more than I bargained for. It has quickly taken the place of our bed covering and we drag it along with us everywhere. The included stuff sack makes it a perfect backpacking quilt, car blanket, concert blanket, beach blanket or full time comforter. You decide how you want to use it but I’m certain it will fit your needs. It is warmer than advertised (in my opinion) and is great blanket for our active lifestyle.
