Mizuno Breath Thermo Layered Tight Review

Dressing for an outdoor workout in transition seasons – fall and spring – in Colorado can be a challenge, but with the Mizuno Breath Thermo Layered Tight, my early morning clothing decisions have been much easier. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from these tights because, in my opinion, the description on the Mizuno website doesn’t really do them justice.

At first glance these tights look like any other paneled cool-weather running tight, but upon closer inspection the thoughtfulness behind the design is revealed. The inside of Mizuno’s Breath Thermo Layered tights have two different materials – a spandex-like material with brushed fleece interior (92% Polyester, 8% Spandex) and a perforated Polyester (87%) and Polyacrylate (13%) material. This perforated material is not the backing of the outside material, but rather a completely separate second layer. Unlike many winter tights, that are just fleece backed, the two layer design in select areas is very unique.

The perforated second layer, the Breath Thermo® layer, is on the front of the thighs and wraps from the sides to the rear of the calf while the brushed fleece makes up the remainder of the tights. The Breath Thermo technology is said to convert moisture into comfortable warmth. Whether it was converting moisture into warmth or not, I’m not sure, but it was definitely regulating temperature and moisture extremely well.

From what I can tell, the material under the second layer is still the brushed fleece not a thinner material. The second layer surprisingly doesn’t add any bulk to these tights and sits very flat without wrinkling.

While these tights are thinner and than most fleece lined tights, they are still warm. These tights were perfect for mornings that started out very chilly, but warmed up quickly. I stayed warm from the start, but never overheated or felt soggy when the temperatures spiked quickly, even during high-intensity workouts.

The Breath Thermo Layered tight features flat lock seams to ensure all-over comfort and DYNAMOTION FIT™ which is said to provide greater freedom of movement, and BodyFit which is supposed to provide strategic support to particular muscle groups. I cannot say confidently that I noticed either of the last two features.

Also featured in these tights are some more standard details like locking leg zippers, back zipper storage pocket, front envelope pocket, reflective logos and accents, gusseted crotch, and an adjustable drawstring elastic waistband. All solid features.

When I first opened these I doubted whether or not I would even be able to put them on because they looked really tiny, which was a concern of mine since I’ve never tried Mizuno before and I couldn’t locate a size chart on the website, but once I pulled them on the fit was absolutely perfect. These are the only full-length tights in my current rotation that I can wear for an entire workout or run without pulling, tugging, or adjusting at all.

I rarely consider paying full price for any gear, but I would pay it for these tights. Well done, Mizuno. For more info on the Breath Thermo Layered Tight and other Mizuno products, visit www.mizunousa.com or www.amazon.com/mizuno.
