Since its launch in 2014, Velocio has consistently produced exceptional cycling apparel that blends high-performance features with eco-conscious practices. Known initially for ensuring women had access to premium cycling gear, Velocio has expanded to offer equally impressive men’s options. Even after SRAM’s 2022 acquisition, Velocio’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and inclusivity remains intact, a reassuring sign for dedicated riders.
Race-Tested at Bighorn Gravel
For my most anticipated gravel race this year—the Bighorn Gravel in Gypsum, Colorado, covering 50+ miles with 6,500 feet of climbing—I chose Velocio’s Ultralight Mesh Long Sleeve Jersey paired with the Adventure Cargo Bib Shorts. Given the scorching temperatures leading up to the race, this was the ideal environment to test ultralight cycling gear.
Unfortunately, my race was cut short due to a spoke failure and subsequent crash, limiting my testing time. However, during an intense, sun-exposed 2,500-foot climb, the breathability of the jersey truly impressed me. Its front panel is constructed from an open-spaced mesh that facilitates outstanding airflow.
Velocio Jersey and Bibs Cooling, Fit, and Sun Protection
I personally prefer long sleeves during most summer rides for their cooling effect and sun protection, and Velocio’s inclusion of UPF 50 protection on the sleeves and back panel proved invaluable. While the front panel lacks UPF protection—presumably because riders typically lean forward, minimizing chest exposure—I still applied sunscreen as a precaution for prolonged exposure.
The front panel mesh is so breathable that it is almost see-through.
A zipper garage is one of those nice extra touches you expect on a high quality piece of cycling kit like this.
The jersey is designed for a race-fit, skin-tight feel, optimizing aerodynamics and performance. Although I reviewed an XL, recent weight loss suggests a Large would have provided a better fit. However, I’d be a bit concerned the length would be an issue for my unusually long torso but such is life for me.
I’m a big fan of zippered jersey pockets for important items.
Either way, the reinforced pockets accommodated all my essentials, including nutrition, a jacket, and even a discarded water bottle I collected along the course. The zippered pocket securely held keys and cards, adding practicality to performance.I am a big fan of having a zippered pocket on jerseys so I don’t have to keep my wallet or money in a loose area or on my bike, where I’ll forget it. The versatile back pocket comfortably held an additional vest, complementing the jersey’s storage.
Structured jersey pockets keep larger items secured
Velocio Adventure Cargo Bib Shorts Performance and Fit
The Adventure Cargo Bib Shorts were equally impressive, especially when positioned on the bike. Standing upright, I noticed slight bunching, but this disappeared completely while riding, demonstrating thoughtful design tailored to cycling postures. The bib suspenders accommodated my long torso, an often overlooked but essential aspect for taller riders.
The back of the bibs have an extra cargo pocket.
Premium Materials and Storage
Fabric quality is a standout feature in Velocio apparel, and the Adventure Cargo Bib Shorts are no exception. At a premium price of $299, expectations for comfort and material excellence are high, and Velocio meets these demands effortlessly. The dual-density chamois pad offered exceptional support and vibration dampening, providing lasting comfort without any unwanted bunching—even on my padding-free saddle.
The thigh pockets are easy to use and expand. (Note: the rip in the fabric in this photo is the result of a pretty substantial crash and not at all indicative of any low quality.)
Strategically placed thigh pockets were accessible yet secure, perfectly balancing compression and convenience. I carried snacks on one side and my phone on the other, with minimal added heat due to the ultralight mesh construction.
