Velocio and its weatherproof, warm, and insulating apparel are here to the rescue! I only say that because lately people are simply stuck in their pain caves. Therefore, I’m looking at this gear as a solid attempt to bring my friends out of their basements for what I hope will be great social and physically taxing group bike rides.

In my experience, Velocio designs and makes quality cycling apparel. I’ve had the pleasure of wearing a few warm weather pieces, and they are still performing at a top-notch level. This assortment of Velocio cold weather pieces that I’ll be reviewing will cover me from head to toe. Hence, I’m excited to get out there to battle whatever Mother Nature will throw my way.

Velocio ZERO+ Glove

My initial take on these gloves is that they appear to be a mid-range temperature glove. They are not super thick, and that’s what gave me that first impression. The key feature that gives these gloves more value is an air cavity or ‘spacer’ between the fabric layers that traps warm air. The proprietary Italian-made soft-shell fabric, consisting of four layers, gives it an extra luxurious and high-quality feel. On top of that, wind and water protection is provided with the DWR treated face combined with a waterproof and breathable membrane.

Notice the gripper layer on the palm and 3 fingers for dexterity with the bar tape and gearing/braking. Furthermore, the gloves are solidly constructed with various panels to add cushioning, protection, and wind-deflecting qualities.

  • Windproof and water-resistant DWR treated four-layer spacer softshell on back of hand
  • Mid-weight fleece backed and DWR treated softshell on palm
  • Reflective Velocio logo and trim details for added low light visibility
  • Rubberized palm and finger grip for better bar contact
  • Super Roubaix inserts on cuff for a gap-freefit
  • Recommended Temp: Cold/wet 30-50F (0-10C)

I look at these as a good alternative to the bigger and bulkier lobster-style gloves, because of the light weight and low profile. My take is that these gloves are roughly good for temperatures in the 40 to 50 range especially if you factor in rain and wind (maybe bump that up 5 degrees in that case). I had hoped that they’d be more rugged for temperatures in the 30’s for me, but alas that did not play out for me.

That said, I would love to see Velocio come out with a sub-freezing heavier duty cold weather glove that can really help fight off the cold and wind. In the meantime, these do cover a large percentage of my cooler weather bike rides. MSRP: $79 Check them out HERE

Velocio Cold Weather Wool Socks

Yes, they are socks. How do you write a thought-provoking and relevant review about socks, you might ask? Well, it’s pretty straightforward. The only things I care about is that they keep my toes warm, and that they fit without unnecessary bunching or rubbing. As with any of these cycling pieces, the weather and temperatures will vary and be different for everyone. The thermal qualities are really good for these wool socks. Hence, even in sub freezing temperatures, these have handled keeping my toes warm. Disclaimer: they were used in conjunction with the Zero+ Bootie Show Covers covered below.

Velocio’s design and sourcing team put some real thought into these socks. This is evident by a mix of fine merino wool and nylon that provides for warmth alongside durability with a bit of stretch to it.

  • Ultrafine Merino is incredibly soft, moisture wicking and thermo-regulating
  • Fully padded footbed and toe for added warmth
  • Flat knit instep and cuff to reduce bulk and improve fit in a cycling shoe
  • Ribbed arch band keeps sock in place
  • 8 cuff with 1/2cm welt for added coverage with tights or leg warmers

One notable feature, evident in the photo above, is the luxuriously thick bottom from toe to heel. I think this is what sets these apart from others I’ve worn in that the base (and possibly some body heat) resonates warmth up through the feet. This is a no-brainer to add to your gear list. Velocio Zero+ Bootie Shoe Covers

The Velocio shoe covers are as effective as any cycling gear I own. Just like the gloves, these shoe covers are graced with the warm air cavity or “spacer”. It traps the heat in which keeps me out riding in comfort for much longer. Four layers of fabric creates for a windproof and water resistant outer, and a softer inner face keeps your feet warm.

The temperature range I’ve used these for is roughly 25 to 50 degrees. In my experience, shoe covers usually have a limited lifespan. Therefore, I think Velocio has fine-tuned the features to withstand wear and tear as I ride and walk in them. That said, I’m sure there will be some rubbing and abuse on the bottoms with time. What I can appreciate is the ease which I can put these on. I’ve had others that take a lot of tugging and pulling. Not the case here. The zippers are solid, but more so, I think the stretch in these covers are what allows for ease in sliding these over my shoes. Also, the stretch banding on top prevents any drafting to take place.

The bottoms feature a mesh-like material on the toe and heel to enhance durability.

  • Windproof and water-resistant four-layer spacer soft-shell
  • Embossed logo and Velocio trim detail for subtle, refined styling
  • Durable water-resistant reverse coil zipper with reinforced heel tab for durability and longevity
  • Fully taped seam for best in class protection against the elements
  • Microfiber silicone printed gripper and internal zipper flap with garage for excellent fit and comfort

MSRP: $109 For more information check out the Booties.

Velocio ZERO Bib Tights

These Bibs are slick! In that they have a glossy feel to it which tells me there’s probably some good wind protection at play. In addition, they look the part as well. Premium pieces of fabric cover the parts and pieces that matter most to protect them from the elements. Furthermore, I like the fact that these bib tights fit snuggly (as they should) while allowing for maximum flexibility to aid in performance.

  • Premium cold weather protection
  • Mesh back brace combines with ThermoRoubaix fabric for a balance of breathability with warmth in extreme temperatures
  • Completely fleece-lined from ankle to shoulder
  • High-stretch heavy-weight softshell front: windproof and water-resistant leading panels with microfiber fleece backing for warmth and protection from the cold
  • Pre-shaped knee for excellent mobility
  • Stirrup foot design is low profile for comfort and added warmth
  • Reflective panels and logos for added visibility in low-light conditions
  • Proprietary Signature chamois developed with EIT

The soft-shell coverage on the front creates for a windproof barrier while the breathable ThermoRoubaix fabric on the back helps in the warmth department. The mesh, again, is quite evident in the left photo above that plays a solid role in balancing out the warmth factor with the ventilation component. The chamois is amazing. I know it looks quite simple, but the padding is positioned correctly with just enough coverage for comfort. When it’s too thick, the bunching or rubbing takes effect, but that has not been the case here.

The calves are blessed with a shiny water resistant fabric. It’s been able to handle the dirt and water spray plus the stretch allows for my beefy calves to feel comfortable. The stirrup foot is something new for me. I like it, because it kind of just buttons up everything around the ankle. Fleece lined warmth from top to bottom has allowed me to really tackle the frigid temperatures. This is not a knock on the gloves or socks as the digits are usually the first to go cold. Wearing these bibs, have kept the entirety of my body warm no matter the temps. MSRP: $299 See Velocio for more info.

Velocio Cold Weather Alpha Zero Jacket

This Alpha Zero Jacket is outstanding, simply put. It’s designed with fully windproof soft-shell coverage on the front, and breathable ThermoRoubaix fabric on the back with a mesh back brace. This jacket amongst all these pieces will be able to withstand the coldest of temperatures.

The front inside lining is soft, fuzzy, and warm. It is designed to keep you out in some extreme elements. I wore it once when it was not too cold yet, and I probably lost 5 pounds just in sweat. With that in mind, find the proper temperature range for you. The back of the jacket provides additional ventilation to help dissipate body heat.

The zipper gets tucked away behind a full length cover or flap to protect any wind from sneaking through. The cool thing after an intense effort or a warming of temperatures is that you can create airflow from the top or the bottom by using the zipper.

The gripper on the back is solid as it hugs and almost suckers onto my bib shorts. It’s long enough, so it does not ride up and create for a nasty wind gap to creep in. The other thing I like is that the 3 back pockets are sizeable enough to bring along whatever you may need. This (as you can see in the photo above) can expand a little as you stuff in something.

  • Premium cold weather protection
  • Mesh back brace combines with ThermoRoubaix fabric for a balance of breathability with warmth in extreme temperatures
  • Completely fleece-lined from ankle to shoulder
  • High-stretch heavy-weight softshell front: windproof and water-resistant leading panels with microfiber fleece backing for warmth and protection from the cold
  • Pre-shaped knee for excellent mobility
  • Stirrup foot design is low profile for comfort and added warmth
  • Reflective panels and logos for added visibility in low-light conditions
  • Proprietary Signature chamois developed with EIT

MSRP: $329 For more information and purchase, please check out the Jacket.

Velocio Cold Weather Base layer

I have enjoyed this base layer tremendously! It certainly has a thicker and warmer thickness to it. Base layers usually have more of a mesh type fabric to allow for that sweat to be moved away from the body. That is definitely the case here, but that extra little fuzzy layer of warmth is nice.

This base layer is the bomb! It is thick and bound to keep you warm. The evidence is shown above. The tiny square patterns are added insulation pieces for the front. The back is an almost see-through mesh that keeps the sweat from gathering on the back. MSRP: $129 Find more information HERE

Taking The Velocio Cold Weather Pieces Out In Nature

Taking the gear out for a spin is easy. Apparently, getting photos while out riding hard in the cold seems to be a bit of challenge for me. Hence, please take my word for the effectiveness what Velocio presents here.

Zwift and Peleton! Two words that are quite conflicting to me. I don’t prescribe to the whole Peleton movement, but I do utilize Zwift to get in a ride to build fitness and get a good sweat on. Having said that, the workouts on these apps are incredible, and keep many riders in great shape year-round. Consequently, many of my friends are quite spirited and super strong no matter the time of year.

Unfortunately, the absolute ultimate result of that progressive technological movement is that it has made many of my bike riding friends go quite soft. Not soft in the athletic sense, but soft in handling a bit of adverse weather. It has literally eliminated a lot of participation to riding outside together. It’s that last bit, ‘together’ which is the sad part.

That’s why this Velocio cold weather gear has come at the perfect time! I really do like riding outside in nature to watch the changes on any particular day. I suppose the crux of the matter is that it takes a bit of mental fortitude. Subsequently, having the right gear on hand certainly goes a long way to getting me, and hopefully others, out for a bike ride. My knowledge of Velocio goes back a few years as I have worn their apparel and accessories for many many miles. Those pieces of apparel fit well, have stood the test of time, and perform as designed. This following assortment will certainly provide the ability to get the wind in your hair (through helmet vents of course)! Every time I go out, it comes down to temperature and how the pieces will work.

We had really warm weather up until about the first of November. Even then, we had a few cooler days, and my Velocio gear was complete overkill. Then the Holidays took away any outdoor momentum I had. It’s January 12th, and I needed to get out on my bike. It was cold and windy with 35 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures, and finally the Velocio Winter Assault line of apparel has come to good use.

Now that it’s February, my crew of riding buddies are itching to get out in the dark, still chilly, and early morning hours. On top of that, the ability of some of these guys is quite strong, so I go into some serious anaerobic pain. That usually happens about 15 miles into my ride, and I’ve been able to stay warm up until that point thus far with my gear. After that, I have to start unzipping to allow for some airflow.

In addition, I’ve worn the jacket on my work bike commutes. Although a bit snug over my work attire, it works well to keep me warm.

Final Thoughts On The Velocio Cold Weather Assault Cycling Gear

This Velocio Cold Weather cycling ensemble is quite extensive in its technological advancement and attention to design detail. As a package, you will be able to brave a lot of the elements without any issues whatsoever. Take a closer look as you dive into each and every one. All the while, keeping in mind that you may find some variables based on the day’s conditions and/or your ability to brave those elements.

The Jacket will keep you warm as it has for me in the coldest of temperatures I have braved. The base layer has come in to save many a day in not only cycling, but also running, skiing, and snowshoeing this winter. The booties have kept my digits warm and toasty. Furthermore, the bibs are a solid piece of cycling apparel that can also handle pretty much anything with its wind and rain repellant features. The gloves are the only piece of gear that isn’t quite for deep freeze conditions, but are a wonderful pair to have as you start venturing outside this season. The socks are a no-brainer, so pick some up already. All that said, you honestly can’t go wrong with any of these.

The prices are listed and ultimate value will be up to you, but I think good quality cycling gear is worth it in my opinion. There is great value in each and every piece to help you get outside. If anything, the bibs, base layer, and jacket are a trifecta of core warmth and protection. I’ve been down to 20 degrees, and not felt the effect. Thus, start with those for sure, and tackle the extremities based on conditions and personal preference. In conclusion, the long lasting quality effect will be evident as I think you will see many seasons of use. For more information or to check some of these out for yourself, visit velocio.cc.
