The KONG Extreme Flyer comes from KONG’s Extreme rubber toy line. The Extreme line features KONG’s most durable, black rubber compound. Aspen, our Airedale Terrier, was the ideal dog tester for this product. Aspen may be approaching senior status, at the age of 8.5, but don’t let his age fool you, as his enthusiasm for frisbees and rubberized toys is almost puppy like.

Durability of the Flyer

The Extreme Flyer is made of a tough, rubberized compound that is designed to hold up against the most aggressive toy chompers. Although the Extreme Flyer is not designed to be a chew toy, it has held up after 1 month of Aspen carrying it before and after play time and has survived some attempted niblings. We previously owned the KONG Classic Flyer for about 2 years, which is made of KONG’s Classic rubber, a less durable rubber than the Extreme line. The only reason we don’t still own the Classic Flyer is that we threw it to close to the lake and Aspen didn’t fetch it in time and it sank. I would anticipate the Extreme Flyer to hold up even longer than the Classic Flyer.

KONG Extreme Flyer Features and Specs

Playing fetch with the Extreme Flyer is a bit difficult on a windy day. The Extreme Flyer is light-weight and does not float well in the wind. We also found that it was difficult to get the Extreme Flyer to hang in the air for more than 60 ft or so, even on a calm day. When the Extreme Flyer is a bit wet, it is super slippery and difficult to throw, but once in the air it does better with precipitation on the frisbee itself and travels farther.

The Extreme Flyer makes up for its’ lack of “flyability” with a few other features, including being soft on the gums and teeth when your dog catches or picks up the frisbee. It is also very portable and can be rolled up and stuffed into your back pocket or within a day pack. The portability is nice so that you can pull out the frisbee for an impromptu fetch session. Aspen also enjoyed the flexibility of the rubber, as he could carry it folded up like a taco when bringing the frisbee back or while carrying it on a walk.

The Flyer is available in one size and features an approximate 8.5″ diameter, making it best suited for medium to large dogs. Unlike some of the competition, it does not feature any fabric, making it super easy to wash off. Another bonus, the Extreme Flyer is made right here in the USA.

Aspen and I felt that the KONG Extreme Flyer is a good disc for short-impromptu frisbee sessions and travel.
