This summer I’ve been actively testing the new Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hiker in various challenging terrains. Despite the season starting a bit late due to persistent snow, I’ve made significant strides in my hunt scouting and backpacking adventures over the past few weeks. My initial introduction to Meindl footwear was with the Comfort Walker earlier this year, where I was immediately struck by its exceptional quality and comfort. Construction

Thoughts on the Vakuum Hikers
With the lingering snow from last winter extending into early summer, hiking in Colorado has presented its fair share of challenges. This provided the perfect opportunity to thoroughly test the Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hikers.
From the outset, the initial fit of the Vakuum Hikers impressed me. They felt remarkably tailored, snugly wrapping around my feet thanks to the MFS panels while allowing ample space for toe box comfort. Walking in them, I experienced no slippage and found them exceptionally comfortable. Having previously reviewed the Meindl Comfort Fit Walker this spring, I had a good understanding of Meindl’s sizing, which proved beneficial given their sizing peculiarities.
My first significant hike in the Vakuum Hikers was a demanding one. This year, I obtained a coveted elk hunting tag for a rugged canyon area in Colorado. Preparing for the hunting season involves scouting these challenging terrains, including a strenuous climb of 2,000 vertical feet in less than three quarters of a mile. This hike rigorously tested both the boots and my endurance—and ultimately, the boots held up better than I did!

Break In
Due to timing constraints, I hadn’t had much opportunity to break in these boots before this outing—a practice I typically adhere to with new footwear, especially given my foot issues from skiing. During the ascent, my feet felt securely locked in, although I did experience discomfort around a bone spur due to the steep incline. Subsequent hikes, including similarly challenging terrain, haven’t replicated this issue, likely due to both boot and foot adaptation over time.
Aside from the initial challenges, these boots have performed admirably. The lacing system effectively secures the feet, which is crucial for both uphill climbs and downhill descents. One standout feature is their impressive waterproofing; during long, wet hikes where the boots were submerged for extended periods, my feet remained remarkably dry—unlike my hiking partners!

Soles Kept Me Anchored
Another standout feature is the grip provided by the MFS-Vakuum Hikers’ Vibram Multigriff outsoles. During the steep descent of the 2,000-foot climb, navigating loose rocks and fallen trees was precarious. The boots provided exceptional stability, with the forward-facing heel tread proving invaluable in preventing slips. My only fall occurred due to my hiking partner slipping above me—not due to any fault of the boots.
In subsequent hikes, these boots have proven comfortable for extended wear, thanks to their supportive insoles and midsoles. They provide the necessary cushioning and support to make hours-long treks enjoyable, maintaining comfort even on rugged terrain.

The Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hikers are undeniably rugged. Weighing in at just over 3.5 pounds per pair, these boots are built for tackling gnarly loose rock and challenging terrain with confidence. However, for less technical trails, where weight is a consideration, lighter options may be more suitable.
Fit
Having established the proper sizing with the Meindl Comfort Fit Walkers, I’ve had no issues with fit since. Typically wearing a men’s 10.5, I’ve found that a 9.5 in Meindl footwear fits perfectly. It’s crucial to invest the extra effort in getting sizing right before purchasing, as Meindl’s sizing may differ from other brands. Throughout my testing, these boots have consistently impressed. From the get go these boots felt custom-made, snug yet accommodating for foot swelling using Meindl’s MFS system. Whether navigating steep inclines during elk scouting in Colorado’s challenging canyons or enduring extended wet conditions, the waterproofing and stability provided by these boots were outstanding. The Vibram Multigriff outsoles proved their worth on loose rock, offering excellent traction and stability on descents.
While not the lightest option at over 3.5 pounds per pair, the Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hikers excel in technical terrain where durability and performance are paramount.
