Whether you’re a climber, runner, hiker, skier, snowshoe’er, or you just love the great outdoors, the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie is a great choice as it is a extremely versatile jacket with many different uses. This jacket is water and wind resistant, breathable, lightweight and durable which makes a great when want to protect yourself from mother natures elements.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie Performance

The main activity that I used the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie most on was for hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Most of the conditions that I hiked in were dry with a wide range in temperatures and winds as the days would progress. For colder temperatures spring, summer, fall temperatures 30-50F, I would use a tech fabric long sleeve and the Ferrosi Hoodie and it was a perfect match. It is good to know that you are typically hiking uphill in most cases the first half of your hike in Colorado, so a quick increase in body temperature is a nice supplement to no insulation in the jacket. For warmer temperatures, you can get away with a tech tee shirt and you will be plenty fine. I found that while creating excessive body heat, the Ferrosi Hoodie did a nice job of venting which helps keep sweat from building up and can eventually chill you if and when you stop. I also got caught in a few brief light rain showers and I am happy to report back no rain penetrated the jacket material.

When doing a little scrambling in the boulder fields, I found the material in the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie to provide ample amount of stretch to move with my movements, this could come in more handy with climbers, but I personally don’t climb much so I can’t attest to that activity for sure. Another activity I have not used this jacket for is backcountry skiing and skinner, but I am excited about using it for this activity. As I mentioned, this jacket doesn’t have any insulation so it won’t keep you warm on the super cold days, but as long as you are moving, you should be good. With the jacket’s flexibility, it will work great while using ski poles.

Jacket Fit

I was able to test out a size medium of the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie and I am 6’0 tall and 173lbs. I found the jacket to have a great fit around the top of the body including my hips. The jacket wasn’t too snug so it didn’t restrict my movement and it wasn’t too loose where extra fabric was getting in the way. Overall, the OR Ferrosi Hoodie was well designed and will fit most average sized athletic guys.

Jacket Storage

For storage in the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie, there are two side pockets that are big enough to fit your typical essentials such as a smart phone, point and shoot camera, and a couple energy bars. However, the pockets are not big enough for most backcountry skins for your ski’s. There is also a chest pocket that I like to use to store my smart phone in when I am using the jacket in colder weather which keeps the phone closer to the body and a heat source so it won’t shut off because it’s too cold.

Final Thoughts

The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie is an excellent option for the athlete that wants a universal jacket that can be used for a number of activities. The performance matches up with the history of Outdoor Research meaning it is absolutely superb. Overall, I am a big fan of the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hoodie and would highly recommend this jacket for all types of athletes.
