There are several ways to combat the chill of spring or fall when going for a spin on the roads. Knee or full leg warmers help with the lower leg, but do nothing to keep your upper leg warm. The PRO Thermal Bib Short from Pearl Izumi just may be the perfect solution.
To add warmth to the short Pearl uses a thermal version of their MicroSensor fabric. The shorts look no different than a standard pair of shorts, but when you look on the inside you can see the inside has a fleece-like feel. While it is a bit thicker than your average cycling short the anatomical patterning of the panels allows it to move well. Somewhat surprising was the Thermal MicroSensor fabric’s ability to move moisture away from the body. This is key because often if you overdress you end up sweating like mad, then that sweat can make you feel very cold later on. The mesh bib upper comes up higher than most other shorts, which again provides a small barrier between you and the chill. This is made from Pearl’s standard MicroSensor fabric and has a 4 way stretch to it for added comfort. For all day comfort, Pearl uses their 3D chamois. The 9 inch inseam fit perfectly and the leg grippers never irritated my skin.
I’ve used this bib short on early morning rides when the air is still cold, on days when my route takes me up into the mountains where the weather is notoriously unpredictable and on days where the temps just won’t rise above 60. I found that the Thermal MicroSensor fabric provided me with that little extra barrier from the elements to keep me comfortable and in the saddle. Many times I would pair these up with some knee warmers, then peel those off as I warmed up. The P.R.O. Thermal Bib is also offered in a knicker for those that want even more protection.
If you like to ride in cooler temperatures or live anywhere other than Southern California or Florida, the P.R.O. Thermal Bib Short from Pearl Izumi would be a great addition to your collection. Versatile and well made, your legs will give out before you get uncomfortable.
