New Balance 1064 Running Shoe Review

The 1064 by New Balance is a neutral-cushioned shoe that weighs in at 9.4 ounces and comes in an array of widths. We tested the 1064 during the winter months while continuing to build base miles for the coming race season. We found that the 1064’s SureLace system and the LockDown Liner combined to provide a nice midfoot wrap that kept our foot snuggly in place. The toe box feels a bit roomier than previous models, however we didn’t mind this feature due to the ample toe wiggle room and the seamless liner that eliminates hot spots. We found that this shoe has excellent cushioning in the heel and good energy return with each heel strike. The upper appears to be incredibly breathable, a feature we were unable to test due to temps hovering around 20-30 degrees. However, we felt the 1064 was a tad stiff during heel to toe transitions and we were surprised by the lack of true forefoot cushioning. New Balance has made efforts to reduce the weight of this shoe, which we applaud, by incorporating a lighter weight midsole component and midfoot support system. We felt that the 1064 is a nice neutral shoe, however updates for next year may need to be considered. Shannon

Shannon, our fabulous female tester, takes gear testing to a new level for women. When not at work or school, she is most likely training for a marathon, climbing one of Colorado’s tallest peaks, riding her road bike, or skiing down a mountain slope. Like many women, Shannon gets cold easily, therefore, we try to test the best all weather gear to help her stay warm and dry during all day outdoor pursuits. In the warmer months, Shannon enjoys exploring the Colorado backcountry with her friends and dogs and attempts to escape for as many trail runs as her schedule allows. Shannon is a great women’s tester because she gives readers true insight into how a product may perform for an active woman.
