The North Face Thunder Jacket Review

The North Face Thunder Jacket is a member of the coveted Summit Series collection and designed for individuals heading out into the backcountry. We found the Thunder jacket to be a go to companion come wintertime thanks to its amazing weight to warmth ratio. This 800-fill down fits like a sweater and weighs a mere 11.8 oz while providing incredible warmth. Weight is saved in this jacket because of The North Face’s use of Pertex Quantum fabric; Quantum is not only one of the lightest fabrics available, but is also rugged enough to withstand shearing forces. Testers loved the fit of this jacket, including long arms, and the easy to cinch waist. We also liked that the Thunder can be compressed into its own left-side pocket in less than a minute which provides for easy stowage and eliminates the need to carry a separate stuff sack. Like all incredibly light down jackets, there is one major down side, the jacket is not very abrasion resistant which leads to small tears or holes and an exit for the precious down feathers. After some heavy use, we have 3 trouble spots that consistently let a little feather out. With that said, we still believe that all the other benefits of this jacket outweigh this and highly recommend the Thunder jacket for backcountry outings worn by itself or under a shell for added warmth. Shannon

Shannon, our fabulous female tester, takes gear testing to a new level for women. When not at work or school, she is most likely training for a marathon, climbing one of Colorado’s tallest peaks, riding her road bike, or skiing down a mountain slope. Like many women, Shannon gets cold easily, therefore, we try to test the best all weather gear to help her stay warm and dry during all day outdoor pursuits. In the warmer months, Shannon enjoys exploring the Colorado backcountry with her friends and dogs and attempts to escape for as many trail runs as her schedule allows. Shannon is a great women’s tester because she gives readers true insight into how a product may perform for an active woman.
