LOWA Tiago GTX Lo Shoe Review

New to the hiking boot lineup this year is the LOWA Tiago GTX Lo, a GORE-TEX lined waterproof low top hiking boot that offers the great quality you come to expect from LOWA with an updated look. The Tiago GTX Lo is the Tempest GTX Lo replacement which has been a long standing popular low boot in the LOWA hiking boot lineup.

Upper Features and Fit

The LOWA Tiago GTX Lo upper is made up of a split leather suede upper on the outside with a GORE-TEX waterproof lining on the inside. The boot outer has held up well to mud, snow and slush, scuffs and scrapes on rocks, and everyday wear through testing. There is a small amount of padding wrapped with mesh fabric around the ankle to provide a secure fit along with helping to keep your feet from overheating. This is a nice feature since GORE-TEX linings can make your feet hot in warmer climates.

I found the fit of the LOWA Tiago GTX Lo hiking boot to be snug enough for a secure wrap around the foot, but not too snug to the point where you get hot spots.  In the past, I’ve found some of LOWA’s boots to be a tad on the wide side that allowed my foot to move around too much in the boot, but I find the fit in the Tiago GTX Lo to be perfect for the medium width foot.

The color scheme in the LOWA GTX Tiago GTX Lo boots can work in a casual business work atmosphere, but it’s nice to know you can step out of the office and onto the trail without switching shoes.

Midsole and Outsole

The outsole of the LOWA Tiago offers plenty of grip over plenty of miles of use. The rubber is sticky on rocks to keep your feet connected on steep pitches, but it has held up with almost no sign of wear after 2 months. Keep in mind I haven’t worn these shoes everyday for two months, but I’ve worn them on about a dozen hikes and plenty of days wearing them around work and in town. Similar to a trail running shoe pattern, the outsole has directional lugs that help you climb uphill on the forefoot and a reverse direction to keep you in control on the descents.

LOWA Tiago GTX Lo midsole

The midsole of the Tiago is made of a PU rubber that is rigid to the point where you won’t feel pointy rocks on your hike, but the boot will flex a little to allow your feet to feel the surrounding environment. Keep in mind, PU is a little heavier than EVA, but it will hold up better over time.

Final Thoughts

Having been a fan of low top hiking boots for decades, I feel LOWA Tiago GTX Lo hiking boots are among the best I’ve tried out over the years. They have a great fit, superior functionality, and they’re not too hard on the eyes. For more information, visit rei.com or amazon.com/lowaboots.
