We will be taking a deep dive into the Himiway Zebra Electric Bike which is an all-terrain electric fat tire bike that has become known for its carrying capacity and long-distance riding mileage.
Unboxing and Assembling the Himiway Zebra Electric Bike
Delivery of a Himiway Zebra electric bike was standard fare. It comes in the basic electric bike box and arrived undamaged. Packaging was more than adequate and all pieces and parts were in perfect condition. The bike has an easy-to-follow video for assembly, and all the necessary tools are included in the package.
The parts that needed to be put on the bike, were the handlebars, front tire and fender, rear rack, headlight and pedals. It took roughly 20 minutes to put everything together. Once the bike is assembled, it’s ready to ride.
Design and Build Quality of the Himiway Zebra Electric Bike
The Himiway Zebra is what Himiway is calling the updated version of their Cruiser. It is equipped with a powerful 750W gear hub motor with an upgraded inner ring, which has high temperature resistance and better heat dissipation, for better all around performance. The 26-inch Kenda fat tire strengthens the traction, avoiding slipping on the ground and sinking in mud or snow. It is equipped with a removable 960Wh Samsung/LG battery capacity and 52 x 5000 mAh cells, improving the riding mileage of the Zebra e-bike to a possible 80 miles with pedal assist and 60 miles with pure electric power.
The Himiway Zebra electric bike is designed with comfort and style in mind. The frame is made of lightweight aluminum alloy, making it strong and helping keep the overall weight down. The handlebars are adjustable, allowing you to customize the fit for your own needs. The seat is also adjustable, providing the perfect level of comfort for almost any rider over 5′ 3″ on the step over model (there is also a step thru model available). Payload
One of the first things that I noticed about the Himiway Zebra is its stout build and smooth welds. Himiway boosts a 400 lb. payload capacity and judging by the robust frame and the 79 lbs. weight of the Zebra, I have no doubts. The word tank comes to mind when trying to describe the Zebra, that is not to say this bike is not nimble, but more so, powerful and heavy duty. For instance, I did a grocery run with the Zebra and fully loaded two pannier bags and a trunk bag with a week’s worth of groceries and the bike didn’t even baulk at the extra weight. The 400 lbs. capacity, makes the Zebra perfect for riders of all sizes. The powerful motor and long-lasting battery provide plenty of power and range, so you can take this bike anywhere you want to go. With its impressive payload capacity, the Himiway Zebra electric bike is perfect for carrying groceries, camping gear, or even a friend. Motor on the Himiway Zebra Electric Bike
The Himiway Zebra electric bike is powered by a 750W geared hub motor, which provides plenty of torque for climbing hills and taking on challenging terrain. Right out of the box it is too powerful and doesn’t allow for any pedal input by the rider. For some people this is what is wanted, for others (myself included), we want to feel like we are still riding a bike rather than an electric moped. Luckily the Zebra allows you to go into the settings and adjust the pedal assist to your riding style. The motor on the Himiway Zebra electric bike is powerful and reliable. This makes it perfect for commuting, cruising around town or tackling trails. The motor is also very quiet, which allows you to enjoy a peaceful ride. With its impressive ability to climb hills and tackle steep inclines, the Zebra electric bike can get you wherever you need to go in a breeze.
Himiway Zebra Electric Bike Battery
The Himiway Zebra electric bike is equipped with a long-lasting 48V 20Ah Samsung/LG lithium-ion battery that can provide up to 80 miles of range per charge. In my experience, the Samsung/LG cell e-bike batteries are the best in the industry when it comes to longevity, both in terms of ride time and year-to-year durability. A 48V 20Ah battery is near the top end for battery specs, which provides greater ride distances and better overall performance. The battery is easily removable, allowing you to charge on or off the bike, as well as at home or on the go. The bike includes a 3.0 amp smart charger, which can get the battery up to full charge in just about 6 hours. With its large capacity battery, the Zebra lets you enjoy riding for longer distances without having to worry about running out of juice.
Shimano 7 Speed Gear Shift System on the Zebra
The Shimano 7-speed gear shift system allows you to easily switch between gears for different terrains. The system is smooth and reliable, giving you complete control over your ride. Along with the pedal-assist system, it is easy to find the speed that suits the terrain. It can also help you to conserve battery life. As it provides you with the option to choose the right gear for the terrain, allowing you to use less power and conserve battery life. This is especially helpful when riding up hills or tackling difficult terrain, as it allows you to find the perfect combination of speed and power for your ride. The Shimano 7-speed gear shift system also provides a more comfortable ride, as it helps to reduce strain on your legs and body. Multifunctional LCD Display
The Himiway Zebra features a multifunctional LCD display that provides you with all the information you need about your ride. The display is easily viewable in sunlight and has a backlight for low light and night riding. The backlight display shows your speed, mileage, battery capacity, and other important stats while you’re riding. You can also set up the display to show your average speed and max speed during your ride. This ensures that you have all the information you need to make sure your ride is as efficient as possible.
Within the settings menu on this display is where you can adjust the speed limit and set up your desired pedal assist levels. You can choose from many different pedal assist levels, ranging from 0 to 9 and assign how much power you would like at each level, which seriously improves the overall riding experience once you get this dialed into your preference. The speed limit can only be set up to 25 mph, which is a bit of a disappointment since the Zebra is capable of speeds well beyond that. Why Himiway chooses to limit the speed to 25 mph is anyone’s guess, but I suspect it is to keep the overall ride mileage higher and likely avoid some legal implications somewhere. The ability to personalize the power settings within the display makes it easy for riders of all skill levels to find that perfect balance between speed and power.
Throttle and Pedal Assist Levels
The Himiway Zebra electric bike offers a throttle and pedal assist system. The throttle allows you to quickly accelerate up to the maximum speed of 25 mph with the half-twist throttle, giving you the ability to swiftly move around obstacles or quickly get up to higher speeds when needed. The pedal assist system is where things get interesting, as it allows you to choose from nine different levels of assistance ranging from 0 (no assistance) up to 9 (maximum assistance). This is great for riders who may not have as much experience with electric bikes, or those who may want to save some energy while riding. The nine levels of assistance allow you to adjust the power output from the motor depending on your needs, whether it be a leisurely ride or a more intense workout. You can also switch between the throttle and pedal assist system at any time, allowing you to customize your ride even further. This gives you the freedom to choose how much power and speed you want at any given moment, making it easier to enjoy your time on the bike.
Hydraulic Disc Brakes
The Himiway Zebra is equipped with Tektro 180mm hydraulic disc brakes that provide excellent stopping power in all conditions. The brakes are durable and reliable, providing peace of mind when riding. Hydraulic brakes are the optimal choice for e-bikes, both from the standpoint of stopping power and maintenance. They are self-adjusting and require little to no maintenance making these the perfect choice for the Zebra.
Tires
The 26″X4″ Kenda All-terrain tires are high-quality tires, that are suitable for all types of terrain. The tires provide a smooth and comfortable ride, while also providing good grip and traction on all surfaces. The tires are puncture-resistant and have a knobby tread which improves the overall traction of the bike.
Kenda is one of the leading brands when it comes to e-bike tires and I have had nothing but great luck with them over the years. So far I have been lucky enough to never get a flat and have gotten thousands of miles on Kenda tires before I have had to replace them due to wear. Kenda is a great choice for tires.
Seat on the Himiway Zebra
The seat on the Zebra is a Selle Royal Saddle which is quite comfortable. It has an ergonomic design and is made of high-quality materials that offer plenty of long-distance ride comfort. The seat also includes a quick-release lever, allowing you to easily adjust the height of the seat as needed. This ensures that you can find the perfect position for your ride, making it more enjoyable and comfortable.
Front and Rear Lights
The integrated front and rear lights, add safety and viewability when riding at night. The front light is a 48V luminosity spotlight that is incredibly bright and powerful, allowing you to see the road clearly and be seen. The rear light is an integrated brake light that activates whenever the brake lever is used, making sure that drivers can see you and letting them know when you are stopping. These lights add a layer of security while riding, ensuring that you always stay visible on the road. The lights are powered by the bike’s battery and come with a stand-alone switch that allows you to easily turn them on and off.
Rear Rack
The rear rack is frame-mounted, allowing you to easily carry any gear that you might need on your ride. The rack is made of sturdy aluminum and is built to support up to 150 lbs. This makes it perfect for a trunk bag and saddle bags/panniers to carry groceries, camping gear, hunting items or other things that you need to transport.
Performance and Riding Experience of the Himiway Zebra Electric Bike
As I mentioned above, out of the box the Himiway Zebra need some power-setting adjustments. It was all pure motor power that was way too snappy and fast. But once I was able to get into the settings and change the pedal assist levels from five to nine and divide the power distribution up more reasonably amongst those nine levels, the Himiway became an absolute joy to ride. It delivers excellent performance on steep hill climbs, supurb trail riding comfort and plenty of battery to tackle even the longest rides.
If there was anything I would change about this bike, it would be the fact that Himiway decided to limit the top speed to only 25 mph. Beyond that, the Himiway Zebra delivers an amazing ride experience that is both reliable and powerful. The bike has a strong and durable frame, making it suitable for any terrain. The integrated front and rear lights provide visibility in low-light conditions, while the rear rack allows you to carry whatever gear you need on your adventure. The Shimano 7-speed gear shift system brings smooth shifts and performance, while the powerful motor provides enough power to tackle just about anything. All of these features combine to give you an enjoyable ride every time you jump on the bike.
Must Have Accessories
There are three accessories that I would recommend for the Himiway Zebra. They are the Adjustable Bike Stem, the Trunk Bag and a set of Pannier’s.
The Adjustable Bike Stem allows the rider to achieve a more comfortable riding position, correcting shoulder/arm/back pain that can be caused by the original setup. The bike stem allows you to easily adjust the height of your handlebars, making it more comfortable to ride and giving you more control over the bike. MSRP $39.99
The Trunk Bag is a spacious bag that attaches to the rear of the bike and is great for carrying items such as tools, a spare tube, snacks, water bottles and other items you might need on your ride. It is built with non-woven fabric and waterproof zippers, making it wear and dirt-resistant. It also features built-in insulation, allowing you to keep drinks hot or cold for up to store 5 hours.
