Bar-U-Eat Review

All Natural. Nothing Weird. This is what caught my eye about the Bar-U-Eat. There were founded in Colorado by a small business man working out of a paddleboard shop. The bars are created with simple, natural ingredients and have a great 4:1 carbs/protein ratio which is great to sustain your energy during a long day of adventure.

I ordered The Bar-U-Eat to fuel my backpacking adventures while I was spending some time in the Rocky Mountains. I ordered a variety pack which worked out great. With 4 flavors available, it was nice to change it up and not eat the same flavor every time. I feel like I was fueling myself with real food rather than something with a hundred ingredients that I couldn’t pronounce.

What You See is What You Get

All four varieties of Bar-U-Eat have the same base ingredients of Almonds, Cashews, Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, Medjool Dates, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds and Salt. Aside from the salt and honey, you can see every one of these ingredients in the original flavor. The Bar-U-Eat comes in 4 flavors: Original, Peanuts n’ Cherries, Oatmeal Raisin, and Coffee Pecan. The additional varieties have a few more ingredients based on the flavor you order.

The combination of nuts and dates really provide anti-inflammatory nutrients into your diet. It is packed with fiber and nutrition. Each bar is 210 calories in a 52 gram bar. That is a really great calorie to weight ratio for long hikes or races where you don’t want to carry a lot of extra weight.

Bar-U-Eat Review

Bar-U-Eat is Great for Special Diets

Bar-U-Eat doesn’t contain anything “weird”, according to their website. If you look at the ingredients list, you can see that is true. I was pleased to find that the bars are gluten free, dairy-free, oil-free and all natural. They also contain no artificial sweeteners or preservatives. This is a fantastic option for those with diet restrictions.

Compostable Packaging

Each Bar-U-Eat comes individually packaged in compostable packaging. It looks and feels like a plastic wrapper but is made of a plant based material from sustainable managed forests. This is the first company to package their bars in BPI certified compostable material. I love that Bar-U-Eat is devoted to feeding out planet, not destroying it.

The packaging is thin and packs down very small. This is a great feature when you have to pack out trash from the backcountry. The smaller the trash the better.

Sustainable Energy Without Artificial Ingredients

Bar-U-Eat performs as a long burning carbohydrate/protein source for long days of activity. The bars contain the ideal combination of carbs to protein (4:1) without added oil or sweeteners. The nuts in the bar provide 10 grams of fat for a long burning energy source. With 27 grams of carbs and 210 calories in a 52 gram bar, they have a great calorie density for sustained energy.

All of Bar-U-Eat’s products are made with 100% organic products which means they are grown without chemicals, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms.

Bar-U-Eat Bites

How do they taste?

All of the flavors of Bar-U-Eat have a delicious base flavor of Medjool Dates which is what binds these bars together. They have a great combination of nuts and seeds based on the flavor you choose. They all contain a large amount of thick rolled oats which can be a little tough to chew. A more pressed variety of oats might take away the tough oats component of these tasty bars. I appreciate the quantity of high quality ingredients such as the Peanut (Peanut and Cherries flavor) and the Coffee Beans (Coffee and Pecan flavor).

The well thought out combination of ingredients make this bar a delicious, filling fuel source for most activities. I did try one on a run while training for an ultramarathon and found that the thick oats were tough to swallow during rigorous activity. During hiking and biking, I didn’t experience that issue and I love the bars for that purpose.
