As the snow melts and hiking trails reemerge, it’s time to dust off the gear and hit the trail. For me, that means lacing up a brand-new pair of hiking shoes: the Stio Men’s Ridgecap Low. There’s nothing quite like starting the spring season with fresh footwear ready for adventure.
Stio has built a strong reputation for producing high-quality outdoor gear. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to review a variety of their products, from jackets and pants to base layers and fishing apparel, and we’ve consistently been impressed. Based in the outdoor mecca of Jackson, Wyoming, Stio is known for clothing that blends performance and style across a wide range of outdoor pursuits. In recent years, they’ve expanded into footwear, now offering around 15 different models, including shoes, boots, and moccasins.
This spring, I’ve chosen the Stio Men’s Ridgecap Low hiking shoes. Designed for versatility, these shoes seem like a great fit for an all-around outdoor lifestyle.
About the Stio Ridgecap Low Hiking Shoes
The Stio Men’s Ridgecap Low is a lightweight hiking shoe designed with built-in stability and trail-ready durability. Weighing in at approximately 29 ounces per pair, these shoes are ideal for day hikes, fastpacking, and everyday trail use.
The upper is constructed from durable ripstop fabric combined with suede and nubuck leather overlays. This combination offers breathability, weather resistance, and protection against trail debris. The materials are designed to keep your feet dry and comfortable while standing up to rugged conditions.

View of Upper Shoe
The shoe features a low-cut ankle profile for increased mobility and a secure lacing system that ensures a snug, customizable fit. The lower two eyelets are traditional, while the next three use reinforced loops that allow for precise cinching, helping to lock the foot in place on uneven terrain.

Lacing System
On the bottom, the Ridgecap Low is equipped with a Vibram® Megagrip outsole, known for its excellent traction on both wet and dry surfaces. The aggressive, multi-directional lugs provide solid grip, while an integrated rock plate offers underfoot protection from sharp or jagged trail obstacles. Additional abrasion-resistant materials at the toe and heel increase durability in high-wear areas.

Inside
Inside the Ridgecap Low, Stio has included a number of features aimed at enhancing comfort over long distances. The EVA midsole offers responsive cushioning for shock absorption and all-day support. Extra padding around the heel and Achilles area helps reduce pressure points and improve fit. A breathable lining helps wick moisture away, keeping feet cooler and reducing the risk of blisters on longer hikes.

Thoughts on the Stio Ridgecap Low Hiking Shoes
Stio might want to consider renaming these to the “Do-Everything” shoes instead of just calling them hiking shoes. The Ridgecap Low is, hands down, one of the most supportive and versatile pairs of footwear I’ve ever worn.
Fit and Support
As someone with flat feet and a relatively narrow heel, finding hiking shoes that actually fit well and offer lasting comfort is a challenge. But these shoes nailed it. Right out of the box, they delivered excellent support across the entire foot, with a secure feel that doesn’t loosen up over the day. The EVA footbed provides outstanding cushioning, making long days on your feet, whether on the trail or around town, much more comfortable

In Search of the Next Fishing Spot
I initially expected to use these primarily on the trails around Steamboat Springs, but they’ve quickly become my go-to everyday shoe. I wear them to work, while traveling, out on the town, and of course, out hiking. They’re just that comfortable. A big part of that comfort comes from the well-designed lacing system. The combination of traditional eyelets and looped speed hooks allows for a precise, snug fit that holds the foot in place. That secure fit means no internal movement, reducing the chance of blisters or foot fatigue.

Perfect Fit
For trail use, the Ridgecap Lows perform exactly as intended. The Vibram® Megagrip soles shine in loose, uneven terrain, providing reliable traction when footing gets tricky. I’ve also tested them in icy and snowy conditions, and the aggressive lugs do a great job gripping slick surfaces. Heel lockdown is solid, and I’ve never experienced any hotspots or slippage, something I often struggle with in other shoes. I especially appreciate the extra Achilles padding, which prevents rubbing and adds to the shoe’s overall durability. I really wish more footwear brands paid attention to this detail.

Traction Control
If I had one small critique, it would be the aesthetic. The Ridgecap Low is slightly bulky and doesn’t have the sleek profile of some other hiking shoes on the market. But for me, that’s a tradeoff I’m happy to make. I’ll take function and comfort over fashion every time.
Lastly, I want to highlight Stio’s commitment to sustainability. Like many of their products, the Ridgecap Low hiking shoes are constructed using recycled and responsibly sourced materials. It’s reassuring to know that this level of performance comes with a lighter environmental footprint.
