MSR has long been a staple in my backpacking gear locker. From water filters to cookware, tents to stoves, every lightweight upgrade brings me back to MSR. I recently purchased the MSR Titan 1400ml Kettle and Titan Long Spoon as I wanted some lightweight cookware that was good for a party of two.

My husband and I usually plan our meals together for backpacking. Whether it is a home-assembled meal or a prepackaged pouch, we like to eat together. Long ago, we decided that each of us carrying a pot was a waste of space and fuel. My husband usually carried our heavy double pot and toughed out the extra weight. Recently, after purchasing a smaller MSR titanium pot for my solo trips, I decided it was also time to upgrade our large pot/wooden spoon combo that we had been lugging around for years. We chose the ultralight MSR Titan 1400ml Kettle and Titan Long Spoon.

Features of the MSR Titan 1400ml Kettle

The Titan 1400ml kettle is just the right size. If you’ve been backpacking even for a short time, you recognize the wide variety of pots available on the market. I thought that MSR had loaded many features into the lightweight Titan Kettle to really make it a practical all around pot. The kettle comes with a well fitting lid with a silicone handle on top. The handle resists heat and even while boiling water, you can easily lift the lid without a hot pad (or use a stick). In addition to the silicon lid handle, the side handle flip out and are also coated with heat resistant silicone. As long as the handles are flipped out prior to putting the kettle on the fire, they don’t get hot and the pot is easy to handle.

The lid of the kettle has an adequate size steam hole to relieve the pressure when simmering a meal. The underside of the lid (the other side of the silicone handle) has a hook molded into it to hang the lid on the side of the pan. This was so convenient! No more laying the lid in the dirt when you need both hands. Lastly, and what I think I loved most about this Kettle was the lip for pouring liquids. I most often use the pot to boil water to make coffee or re-hydrate meals. The kettle’s lip provided for a very controlled pour exactly where you wanted. Not a drop spilled and no hot water ran down the side of the pot. What a luxury!

A Kettle that is Large Capacity, Super Lightweight

The diameter of the Titan 1400ml Kettle is just over 5 inches. This makes the kettles height and width nearly equal. This provided for a very stable kettle on my small rocket stove and I had no concerns of the pot being top heavy or falling off of the burner. The fluid capacity of the kettle is 6 cups. This means that we can hydrate 2 meals and two hot chocolates with one pot of water. Bonus! Being made of super strong titanium, this pot weighs in at a mere 5.4 ounces. The large MSR fuel canister fit inside with my small stove with no problem which made it very practical at saving space in my pack.

The MSR Titan Long Spoon Features

The MSR Titan Long Spoon (8.4 inches long) was designed to reach those deep corners of your bagged meals without getting your hand inside the messy bag. It is a brilliant design, all the way down to the angle of the spoon bowl. The spoon handle has a groove in it so any liquid that may get on your spoon from stirring or eating will run back to the bowl of the spoon (not on your lap). I love this thing! Most recently, I used it with my new Titan 1400ml Kettle. The spoon was so nice for stirring the food (no hot fingers). The titanium didn’t get too hot and I was able to quickly stir and replace the lid without having to use a hot pad or towel. Nice!

The Long Spoon has a wide bowl perfect for scooping up the last of your meal. While it’s design is angled to be a bit more horizontal coming out of a bag, it was not too much of an angle to make it awkward in your mouth. The long spoon has now replaced my old spork AND the large spoon I used to stir my large pot  It is a win-win weighing in at a tiny .7 oz.

Final Thoughts about the MSR Titan 1400ml Kettle and Long Spoon

MSR has done a great job upgrading their ultralight cookware to include the Titan 1400ml Kettle and the Titan Long Spoon. I thought that both pieces saves us many ounces in weight and were super functional. The pot has all the features you need to use this kettle to cook dinner for two and make coffee without burning up excess fuel. The Titanium heats and cools quickly and is an essential upgrade for anyone looking to shed some weight from their pack.
I thought the quality was excellent and the price reasonable at $69.95 (Kettle) and $17.95 (Spoon). The pot is designed to nest neatly with the Titan 900ml pot and a fuel cannister if you need even more cooking capacity.
