adidas Supernova Sequence 4 Running Shoe Review

All of the major players in running footwear have their workhorse, best-selling lines that have been around forever. Asics has their 2100 series, Nike has the Pegasus, and Adidas has the Supernova. The Supernova has been around for many years and this season’s brand new Supernova Sequence 4 should be another big hit for Adidas. This is a fairly beefy stability shoe for significant overpronators, and the Pro-moderator Plus medial post does a good job of controlling pronation, but didn’t feel overly clunky like some shoes with significant medial posting shoes do.

The upper of this shoe provides impressive comfort, with Geofit located at the collar of the heel which is a memory foam that wraps the heel in a comfortable, secure collar, and the logo overlays on the saddle of the shoe connect the laces to the base of the shoe and really lock down the foot without creating any noticeable pressure points. Our testers reported great security or ‘lockdown’ in the Sequence 4 with great comfort thanks to a breathable mesh with high-quality materials providing overlays and structure. The shoe features 360-degree reflectivity, and the ‘sharp blue’ colorway we received from Adidas looks pretty great as well.

The mid- and outsole of this shoe is ‘where the magic happens’. It features a fully-decoupled Formotion heel system which is designed to dissipate the shock generated at heel-strike. The look of it is rather wild- the pod on the lateral side of the heel is completely separate from the rest of the midsole and connected by only a rubber ‘bridge’ on the outsole. This decoupled heel, along with a Torsion system, adiPRENE in the heel and adiPRENE+ in the forefoot create a great smooth ride without noticeable interference from the medial post. Some of our testers did comment that the base of the Sequence is rather tall and beefy, which makes it not terribly flexible.

We tested the Supernova Sequence 4 on 3-5 mile recovery runs and weekend long runs up to 15 miles and were very impressed that, for a high-stability trainer, it provides a well-cushioned ride and that the pronation control wasn’t overly annoying for our testers who don’t need as much pronation control. At 12.7 oz.
